STENOPIS WYWIADU RADIOWEGO (WPNA 103.1 FM)
Lektor: News you can use. Pożyteczne informacje od naszych radiowych partnerów.
Redaktor: Radio 103.1 FM.
Wanda Antczak: Nasza szkoła to szkoła z tradycjami i dużym dorobkiem edukacyjno-wychowawczym, założona 48 lat temu przez nestorów oświaty polonijnej, Zofię i Wiktora Barczyków, którzy dali kierunek misji naszej szkoły – misji wychowania i nauczania młodzieży polonijnej, wychowania go w duchu polskości i wartości chrześcijańskich.
Redaktor: Mówimy tutaj o polskiej szkole w Chicago.
Łukasz Gąsior: Do końca czerwca można zarejestrować dziecko z dodatkową zniżką.
Takie wydarzenia pomagają dzieciom budować piękne wspomnienia związane z polską szkołą, integrować się z rówieśnikami i jeszcze mocniej poczuć więź z polską kulturą i tradycją.
Od 10 lat współpracujemy z panią Grażyną Augustik, znaną śpiewaczką jazzową, która organizuje festiwal Chopin in the City.
Redaktor: Czyli Buffalo Grove, Palatine. Wszystko znajdziecie także na stronie internetowej www.fryderykchopin.org. Można także zadzwonić pod numer telefonu: 847-307-5366. 847-307-5366. TRANSCRIPT OF THE RADIO INTERVIEW (WPNA 103.1 FM)
Announcer: News you can use. Useful information from our radio partners.
Host: Radio 103.1 FM. Today on our airwaves, we have a very essential topic, a highly important topic, one regarding the education of our youngest. We will be talking about the Frédéric Chopin Polish School, as we are joined on the air by Mrs. Wanda Antczak, the school principal, and Mr. Łukasz Gąsior, the president of the school’s board of directors. Good morning to both of you.
Wanda Antczak: Good morning, Mr. Host. Good morning to all the listeners of Polish Radio.
Łukasz Gąsior: Good morning, welcome everyone.
Host: Let’s start with this: is it already possible to register the kids for the new school year?
Łukasz Gąsior: Yes, registration has just launched at our school, so we invite everyone for the 2026/2027 school year. Don’t wait, reserve your spots. Only a very minimal deposit is required upon registration, and I want to emphasize that registration comes with an additional discount until the end of June.
Host: And we are talking about a school with an incredible tradition, a remarkably rich one, as it has been around for nearly half a century. In fact, we are already approaching that beautiful milestone. Principal, why exactly is it worth choosing the Frédéric Chopin Polish School?
Wanda Antczak: Our school is a school with traditions and a great track record of educational and upbringing achievements, founded 48 years ago by the pioneers of Polish diasporic education, Zofia and Wiktor Barczyk, who set the direction for our school’s mission—the mission of raising and educating Polish-American youth, bringing them up in the spirit of Polish identity and Christian values. We have a very rich curriculum covering students from preschool—meaning three- and four-year-olds—all the way up to high school, and we conclude with the high school graduation exam (matura). We have experienced teachers with higher degrees in pedagogy. In our school, religious education is optional. Religion classes are held either before or after regular classes. The school also holds state accreditation. Upon graduating from high school, a student earns three high school foreign language credits—one credit for each school year.
Host: We are talking here about a Polish school in Chicago. We are dealing with kids whose parents mostly speak Polish. The children themselves very often communicate fluently in English right from birth, meaning they are bilingual children. We frequently hear the term “bilingualism.” What exactly is this bilingualism in Polish schools, meaning the bilingual program?
Łukasz Gąsior: Nowadays, more and more Polish-American children speak Polish only partially or not at all. That is why we are meeting these needs by offering a unique bilingual program. This is an ideal option for children who are just starting their journey with the Polish language or who need more support in learning. Thanks to this program, children can gradually build their confidence, get to know the Polish language and culture in a friendly atmosphere, and more easily connect with their Polish roots.
Host: How important is it for a teacher, an educator, to have continuous contact with a child from the very first grades through the subsequent years? How significant is that from an educational and developmental standpoint?
Wanda Antczak: It is, of course, of immense importance, especially in Polish-American schools where the level of proficiency in a classroom can sometimes vary, and a teacher who conducts classes for the first three years—for example, in regular tracks—knows their students, knows how to work with specific groups, and knows what needs to be caught up on with whom. That is why, for instance, in the bilingual program, a teacher often teaches from the first grade all the way up to high school, because—especially in bilingual classes—the proficiency level frequently varies among students. This is truly a massive mission for a teacher, but at the same time, an immense joy when they see the progress of the work.
Host: Since we mentioned that registration for the new school year is already underway—as we discussed right at the beginning—why exactly is it worth making the move in June and registering a child right now?
Łukasz Gąsior: You can register a child with an additional discount until the end of June. At the beginning of July, the price will go up a little bit. Despite that, we have very affordable prices, discounts for large families, and one of the specific perks of our school is… any family that has more than three children, meaning the fourth child, can already attend our school for free. Our late principal and school founder always used to say that every Polish child should have the opportunity to attend a Polish school.
Host: fryderykchopin.org is the website where you will find all the information. School is not just about lessons. School is also about extracurricular activities; school is also about all kinds of events that you participate in, and you are an exceptionally active institution.
Łukasz Gąsior: Yes, we organize numerous contests, school picnics, and the “Hejnał” dance ensemble also operates at the school. We build a unique community and unforgettable events that the kids simply love. One of those periods every year is Christmas time, the meeting with Santa Claus, the school Christmas Eve dinner, and the Christmas bazaar. This is truly a time filled with Polish tradition, a festive atmosphere, caroling together, fun, and joy. Such events help children build beautiful memories associated with the Polish school, integrate with their peers, and feel an even stronger bond with Polish culture and tradition.
Host: Let’s also add that the school’s patron, Frédéric Chopin, sets a high standard, doesn’t he?
Wanda Antczak: Yes, it sets a high standard. For 10 years, we have been collaborating with Ms. Grażyna Augustik, a well-known jazz singer who organizes the Chopin in the City festival. As part of this festival, concerts of Chopin’s music and more are held annually at our school. These are beautiful concerts attended by all the students of our school, but we also invite representatives from all Polish-American schools.
Host: Tell us, then, when do classes take place?
Wanda Antczak: Classes take place on Fridays and Saturdays. On Friday afternoons, we start at 5:00 PM with religion classes, and regular classes run from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. On Saturdays, we start at 9:00 AM, regular classes run until 12:00 PM, and from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM we have religion classes.
Host: You are located in two places.
Łukasz Gąsior: Yes, the main location is at St. Thomas of Villanova School, by St. Thomas of Villanova Church in Palatine, and also at Buffalo Grove High School in Buffalo Grove.
Host: So Buffalo Grove and Palatine. You can also find everything on the website www.fryderykchopin.org. You can also call the phone number: 847-307-5366. 847-307-5366. Thank you very much.
